As more and more online casinos have been established in recent years, researchers should focus more on pathological gambling now more than ever before.
Such avenues would take advantage of some people’s gambling addiction. For those of you who do not know, pathological gambling is now recognized as a legitimate psychological disorder as it is now included in the American Psychological Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders 5 th Edition in 2013.
The good thing is that more research has been conducted on the matter and findings should be published as fast as possible to help people who are in need.
Why Pathological Gambling is a Problem
In 2014, Saudi Heiress Nora Al-Daher, which is the wife of a famous politician, sued the Ritz Casino in London since the institution did not follow her imposed gambling limit, resulting in a huge gambling debt of $2.8 million.
Although she argued in court that the casino took advantage of her gambling addiction, the judge and the public actually ruled against her.
In her case, she was still quite fortunate because she is from a wealthy family. However, what about in low-income earners or middle-class households?
What is Currently Being Done
Researchers want people to forget about images of the limelight. They want you to forget about roulette tables, pokers, images of casinos and horses, and all things associated with gambling institutions.
But beyond that, there is a move that online gaming should be included in the next iteration of the DSM as well. In fact, the World Health Organization is already introducing gaming disorder as part of its International Classification of Diseases in the foreseeable future.
Governments should provide the necessary funding to further the research since studies on gambling are too scarce due to underfunding. The small number of research is not substantial enough to compel lawmakers to take action, so this has to be changedif anything were to be improved in the future that relates to gambling and gaming, in general.
There are some countries, however, that are making their own programs to help problem gamblers. For instance, the 2004 Reno Model in the United States has different communities address the dangers of gambling.
Some communities would impose limits on gambling institutions and they would provide some much-needed psychiatric assistance to those who are willing to change their ways. Hopefully, other government bodies all over the world would follow suit.
Research by Vested Companies
Now, there are some entities that are willing to fund research on how to best help problem gamblers change their ways, but the irony of it is that most of these funds come from the agencies where the problem starts- gambling companies.
For instance, the US National Center for Responsible Gaming was given a substantial amount of money from different gambling entities to further the research on pathological gambling.
Although money was given for a good cause, the results might be skewed in favor of the gambling companies themselves.
Pathological gambling has become quite a huge concern. Hopefully, more and more governments are looking into this matter.
